Mindfulness Meditation Retreat

Friday March 23 – Sunday March 25
Deer Valley Meadows Camp & Conference Centre
40km East of Red Deer, AB

The Mindfulness Meditation Retreat is suitable for everyone, regardless of previous meditation experience.

In order to feel good—relaxed, calm and joyful—we need to be able to master our own mind. This is because all of our unhappy feelings arise from our distracted, uncontrolled minds. Like waves in the ocean, these spontaneous thoughts and feeling are continuous. But this is only due to lifetimes of poor mental habits. We are very accustomed to not controlling our mind—normally we just follow every thought and fancy as it arises. But with effort, we can train our mind to remain peaceful and calm all the time. With good feelings and intentions pervading our lives, we will become better people and be of great benefit to those around us.

The purpose of this retreat is to develop our capacity to meditate single-pointedly and then to carry a meaningful intention into the activity of our daily lives. Meditations will focus on training in mindfulness and alertness and finding real meaning in our life. By observing and transforming our mental actions, we will eventually have a peaceful mind all the time. Then we will be happy all of the time, since happiness arises from a peaceful mind. How good is that?

There will be silence in the mornings, with the exception of meditation instructions.

The retreat will end on Sunday with the Offering to the Spiritual Guide puja, which consists of chanted prayers followed by an offering feast. This puja is the cause of great purification of negativity and an accumulation of great merit (good karma). Our tradition has a commitment to offer these chanted prayers on the 25th day of each month.

Texts used in this retreat will be How to Understand the Mind and How to Transform Your Life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

Location

The Peaceful Heart Retreat will be held at Deer Valley Meadows Christian Camp & Conference Centre, about 40km east of Red Deer. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, towel and your personal items. Bring some good shoes and layered clothing for exercise and fresh air between meditation sessions. We will bring our meditation cushions from the Centre, but if you prefer your own please bring it. Of course chairs are also provided.

During retreat it is beneficial for practitioners to place offerings to Buddha and the Spiritual Guide on the shrine, and it is also customary to make a pure food offering (vegetarian and non-alcoholic) at the Offering to the Spiritual Guide puja, to be held Sunday afternoon. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email us.
