Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche is the founder of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU.)
Geshe Kelsang is a fully accomplished meditation master and internationally renowned teacher of Buddhism. From the age of eight he studied extensively in the great monastic universities of Tibet and earned the title Geshe, the highest scholastic achievement of the Gelug tradition. Under the guidance of his Spiritual Guide, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, he then spent the next eighteen years in meditation retreats in the Himalayas.
In 1977 Geshe-Kelsang, encouraged by his own Teacher, accepted an invitation to teach at the Manjushri Mahayana Institute in Ulverston, England (now the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre and Temple for World Peace), where he lived and taught for thirty years. Over the years, he has gathered tens of thousands of disciples and established meditation centres and temples throughout the world. He attributes this success to maintaining a good heart all the time and always wishing to make others happy.
He has published a series of remarkable books on Buddhism and meditation, from basic introductory books to advanced philosophical texts and meditation manuals. These books reveal Buddha’s authentic methods for training the mind in wisdom and compassion in a presentation that is meaningful to the people of our modern world.
Although Geshe Kelsang now officially retired as the General Spiritual Director of the NKT-IKBU, he continues to guide and inspire the organization. Well into his eighties, Geshe-la continues to write and many new editions and books have recently been published and more are expected to appear soon.
Geshe-la has established three unique study programs, and trained over two hundred qualified Teachers and a flourishing ordained community, and created a project to build Buddhist Temples in every major city in the world.
Venerable Geshe-la is deeply cherished and respected by so many because he shows a perfect example. His words and actions reveal his loving kindness, humility and deep wisdom realizations. He is a perfect Mahayana Spiritual Guide.
